Maciv-nodes experiment successful !

From September 15 to 24, 2025, seven teams of two people installed 624 mini-seismological stations (called “nodes”) on the most recent volcanoes in the Massif Central, Chaîne des Puys, and Monts-Dore.

This is the largest seismological network ever installed by a university team, in terms of both the number of instruments (624) and the area covered by the network (80 km x 100 km).

The array was dismantled in late October 2025, after 1 month of operation. Six teams of 2 people recovered the instruments in 5 to 6 days. 621 of the initial 625 instruments were recovered, with three instruments stolen and one accidentally destroyed during the installation phase. They were shipped by truck to the University of Helsinki, which hosts the Finnish seismic intrument pool FINNSIP, owner of the nodes. Data will be extracted by the FINNSIP colleagues and sent to Grenoble in mid-December.
