June 10, 24 : Installation of MACIV profiles has started

From 10 to 14 June, 2024, 10 people from ISTerre and LMV have installed 25 new seismic stations along the N-S, E-W and diagonal profiles of the MACIV experiment (red diamonds on the map below).
The 40 remaining stations will be installed in the first week of July (4 stations), then in the fall of 2024.
These stations belong to the temporary network with code XF_2024.

October 7, 24 : 80% of profile stations are installed

From 30 September to 4 October, 2024, 9 people from ISTerre and the LMV have installed 23 additional seismological stations along the North-South and East-West profiles of the MACIV experiment.
The remaining 13 stations will be installed before the end of November 2024.
These stations belong to the temporary XF network.

Jan. 29, 25 : All 65 profile stations are now installed

On 29 January 2025, colleagues from Toulouse have installed the last MACIV profile station, MN29A, in the municipality of Félines-Minervois (34).
The XF network is now fully installed, with 65 stations.
This installation completes the deployment of the two temporary networks of MACIV broadband stations, with a total of 100 stations in the field until 2027 : XP : blue stars on the map, 35 stations throughout the French Massif Central, complementing the permanent networks (black stars), (…)

June 18, 2025 - Discovery of deep long period earthquakes beneath volcanoes of the French Massif Central

A recent study published in Geophysical Research Letters by the MACIV Team (Shapiro et al., doi:10.1029/2025GL114904) reveals atypical seismic signals beneath the volcanoes of the Massif Central. These signals, associated with the active presence of magma at depth, suggest that the magma reservoirs of the Chaîne des Puys and the Pavin maar may still be active, despite 6,700 years of volcanic dormancy.

July 30, 25 - Seismic waves generated by the great Kamchatka earthquake of July 29 (Mw8.8) have crossed the Massif Central

A large-magnitude earthquake occurred on July 29, 2025, at 23:24 (UTC), off the southeast coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Its moment magnitude Mw is 8.8.
This is the strongest earthquake since the Tohoku-Oki earthquake (off the coast of Japan) on March 9, 2011 (Mw=9.1), and the eighth strongest earthquake recorded by global seismological networks.

Maciv-nodes network installation successful !

From September 15 to 24, 2025, seven teams of two people installed 624 mini-seismological stations (called “nodes”) on the most recent volcanoes in the Massif Central, Chaîne des Puys, and Monts-Dore.
This is the largest seismological network ever installed by a university team, in terms of both the number of instruments (624) and the area covered by the network (80 km x 100 km).
